1. Droppings in protected areas
Rodent droppings are often found where animals can travel without much disturbance: along walls, behind stored items, inside cabinets, in garages or in attic spaces. 2. Scratching or movement after dark
Mice and rats are commonly active when the home is quieter, so scratching, light scurrying or movement in a wall or ceiling may be more noticeable at night. Sound alone cannot confirm the species; squirrels and other wildlife can create similar noises. The location and timing should be considered alongside physical evidence.
3. Gnaw marks and damaged materials
Rodents gnaw. Damage may appear on stored food packaging, cardboard, wood edges or other materials near their travel routes. Repeated gnawing near a gap can also point toward a possible entry route.
4. Nesting material
Shredded paper, insulation, fabric or other soft material gathered into a protected area can be a nesting clue. Finding a nest does not tell you how the animal entered, which is why the exterior inspection matters too.
5. Activity around garages, attics and crawlspaces
These areas provide shelter and often contain transitions where utilities, vents, doors, rooflines or building materials meet. A rodent inspection should look beyond the immediate sign and trace where the animal may be moving.
